| | There's a Poet on the Line
Last night my friend and fellow
poet Emily called me. Emily and I were roommates my last year at USF
and we were both in the MFA in Writing program studying poetry. It was
good to hear from her, which reminds me that now she's in the country
again I should try and call her more often.
Anyhoo, Emily called to catch up
and tell me she's planning a visit to San Francisco and hopes to
convene me, her and our other poet friend Todd. What do poets do when
they get together? (That sounds like a wonderful rhetorical
question...if a poet falls in a forest, does she make a sound?)
Emily was actually walking under a
canopy of trees when she called heading home from work. She confessed
to being in a writing slump. I told her not to worry. I actually think
that for writers who have 9-5 jobs it's a little typical that we have
cycles of productivity which depend on other stressers. Right now I'm
doing a lot of reading. But it will reach a point and I feel it coming
on, that I'll want to be writing instead of reading. Just wait. You'll
see.
Speaking of MFA's, I've decided to postpone my application to graduate
school. If you'll recall I am looking at MFA programs in playwriting.
My top choices are Brown and Julliard. This whole year I've been
thinking about applying, but actually dragging my feet a bit. Well, a
lot.
I have to go with my gut. I'm not ready. Not ready as a playwright to
jump into a program. In the words of my good friend Enrique who is
currently at Brown, it's a good idea to have a sense of who you are as a playwright and your process. Plus, I'm not ready to leave the Bay Area just yet. So next year I'll apply. Count on it.
