 Why 90 Pages

I was chatting online with fellow playwright Christopher Chen this morning, each of us asking what the other is currently working on. Chris asked about my page count, which is still at 64 (I didn't work on the play last night because I decided to get to bed early).

Chris asked why I was so bent on getting to 90 pages. It turns out that he's working on a play that's 132 pages and must trim it down. Well, for me the 1 minute a page rule pretty much applies. My other plays are around 90 pages and run close to an hour and a half so if I want a play to be considered a full length I have to shoot for that magic number: 90 pages.

Oh I wish I could write a two hour play. Some day...maybe.

But for now I'll struggle a bit with the play and then call on my dramaturg to help me see what's missing. But before Nakissa will take on that task she and I have to finish Woman on Fire. We talked yesterday about setting up a meeting to watch a video of the last reading of the play in order to get back into re-write/dramaturgy mode. We're all about finishing that play.

Here's to finishing.

Marisela, I consider anything 70 minutes or more to be full-length. There was a play at the Magic sometime back that was about that long; one at the New Conservatory that was 65; and isn't Mamet notorious for short plays, even when they run on Broadway? I mean, the current Speed-the-Plow--it can't possibly be more than 80 minutes, can it?

hmm...70 pages, really? That's great. I think that 90 pages got into my head because I've seen submission guidelines stating, "no fewer than 90 pages."

Though, I still think there's more to tell in my play. Like there are places to flesh out the love story, or that the play is in my head and I wonder if it's all on down on paper just yet. The development process and time will tell.

But thanks for the info. Good to know.

Yeah, just write it. Don't worry about page numbers. And don't worry about submission guidelines either. I used to send to places that said agent submission only when I didn't have an agent, and some of them responded to my query and eventually read my work.
