 Thank You, Jeremy Wade

Alternate title: How My Crush on Jeremy Wade Gave Me a Play Idea

While watching a marathon of River Monsters today, it's one of the few Animal Planet shows I watch (partly because I've developed a little crush on the British host Jeremy Wade and partly because I find like the educational value of the show), I got an idea for a new play.

I know what you're thinking. Shouldn't I work on finishing Woman on Fire or Heart Shaped Nebula. Or perhaps I should try and finish a first draft of Wolf at the Door.

Yes.

But it's also very important to remember that when your muse whispers in your ear it's important to listen. So I did. And I took notes.

What got the muse whispering? Well, it was the piranha episode of River Monsters. And as the show reveals that piranhas tend to swim in schools and hide in shoals because there is one river creature they fear: the river dolphin. And while host Jeremy Wade feeds playful river dolphins a bit of trivia splashes across the screen, it's a note about an Amazonian folktale that tells of a river dolphin emerging from the water disguised as a beautiful man.

So there it is, the seed for my next fairy tale play. It'll be the second of the trilogy. Why a trilogy? Maybe it's the poet in me, three has a very complete feel to it. Wolf at the Door was the first and it was inspired by a dream and a Meso American myth that dogs carry the spirits of the dead across the river to the afterlife. So the new new new play will also have to do with a river.

And so far I have some character names (names are important to me since they often carry special meaning). They are:

Belmira (which means "beautiful to look at"): the bride to be
Duarte  (which means "protector of the land"): the groom to be
Moises (which means "pulled from the water"): a handsome man pulled from the river 3 days before Belmira's wedding

There will also be a sister, don't have a name for her just yet. But I do have a working title: The River Bride.

More later,
M

Ooh, sounds interesting. You go river girl! Hey, does this mean that pretty soon you'll have a play to correspond with each element? It'll be just like Yeats. Very classy.

I dunno about each element. In both fairy tale plays a river is important to the plot. Maybe that will be the tie in.
