| | AlterLab Retreat: One Fantastic Weekend
This past weekend was fantastic. It was great to hear the new plays my AlterLab peers are all working on and it was great to hear The River Bride read aloud for the first time. More on that in a bit.
Saturday morning was AlterLab artists only as we heard two of the works-in-progress read aloud. After lunch, and a quick cat nap, actors began to arrive and we delved into the rest of the plays.
I felt kinda lucky because one of the actors I had in mind for future readings of The River Bride was actually invited by AlterTheater to help read the plays at our retreat. Hugo, who read the part of Miqueo in Heart Shaped Nebula for my June reading, arrived right after our nap and helped us read the last three plays. I think it's always nice to work with the same actor on a different play because they often can see patterns in the writing that I myself don't notice.
In fact, he did notice one. My characters that are in love finish each other's sentences. Huh. I mean, I knew I was doing that, but I was doing it for poetic/writing reasons. I hadn't realized that the ones doing it were the characters that were in love. As I considered this more a thought came to me: Of course they do. They are one heart, one mind. So apparently I had an subconscious philosophical reason behind it as well.
After my play was read I got lots of great notes, ideas and questions during the discussion we had afterward. I definitely have lots to think about and address in the next draft, which I'll work on for the next few months (yes, a much slower pace than the one to crank out this first draft).
The following morning we began the day with pancakes and then free time to write. We followed that up with a logistical meeting to plan out the next monthly meetings. And then I accompanied Jeanette to an afternoon fundraiser where I read the stage directions to the play AlterTheater is currently producing.
I made it home around 4:30pm and was thoroughly exhausted. Still am a bit tired, my back mostly.
Now I have to plan when I'm going to take in my computer to the Apple Store to get the top replaced. Gotta figure all this out ASAP, 'cause I need my computer and they'll need it for a week to make the replacement. That's a lot of time for a writer with deadlines.
